The South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) Trust is a not-for-profit charitable trust providing schools and other establishments with safe, secure, managed and supported connectivity and associated services, learning technologies to improve outcomes, and the toolkit for being safer online.

The SWGfL Trust works hard to save money right across the school. As a contracting authority, we’ve sourced best value services procured on behalf of schools in the UK, underpinned by the right contracts and protection for schools.

Our Schools Internet Services connections are provided by our key partner, RM IHG, at 0% margin. Schools can choose from the widest range of connectivity solutions to meet all budgetary and functionality requirements. And because we provide a centrally managed service, not just a connection, every single school benefits from the very best safety and security technologies, keeping teachers and learners protected with the best performing solutions, without the cost of them.

Our aggregated purchasing power helps us find other ways to save schools money too including savings of up to 70% on anti-virus and encryption software.

And because we’re a not-for-profit charitable trust, we’re motivated by doing the right thing for our schools.

The SWGfL Trust is a world leader in online child safety, a founding member of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety as well as an advisor to Governments and the lead partner in the UK Safer Internet Centre.

We have continued to support and advise Ofsted and DfE in implementing standards around online safety in English schools: the new framework for inspections includes clear references to both ‘e-safety’ and ‘cyberbullying’ whilst SWGfL has made significant contributions in constructing briefing advice for inspectors. Our canvassing and advice has also contributed to the retention of digital citizenship and online safety as an important component of the new computing national curriculum.

We work tirelessly to ensure that not only children are safer whilst online but also their parents and those working with them, where ever they are.

The SWGfL Trust invests in teachers to develop skills that will enable them to utilise technology to impact positively on teaching and learning. The South West Teacher Network focusses on creating opportunities for teachers to further develop their skills and knowledge in areas including: Digital literacy; Digital citizenship; Basic skills; Computer programming; Technology in other subjects; and whole school technology.

We continue to make available, valuable services and products that can support and enhance learning for children in school; and because the Schools Internet Services is part of the NEN, (The Education Network) connected schools benefit from access to a range of high quality teaching and learning resources.

The Schools Internet Services is provided by our key partner RM IHG, expert integrators, RM IHG bring together solutions from partners including: BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk Business, Microsoft, Cisco, Tanberg and Sophos, to ensure that the Schools Internet Services provides the best possible service, at the best possible price.

The Education Cloud Service is provided in collaboration with BT, and a whole host of partners from Groupcall, Airhead and Impero to Microsoft and Google.

Together with Microsoft and a growing range of partners our innovative teacher network focuses on supporting teachers to develop skills that will enable them to utilise technology to impact on their teaching and learning.

The UK Safer Internet Centre is coordinated by a partnership of three leading organisations; Childnet International, the South West Grid for Learning and the Internet Watch Foundation. It is co-funded by the European Commission's Safer Internet Programme and is one of the 31 Safer Internet Centres of the Insafe network. The centre has three main functions: an Awareness Centre, a Helpline and a Hotline.

Our award winning e-safety self-review tool, 360 degree safe helps schools to review their e-safety policy and practice and is shown to have a significant impact on school e-safety provision.

The SWGfL Trust is a not-for-profit charitable trust working together with 15 South West local authorities and 2.500 schools to provide extensive and cost effective ICT services, including the Schools Internet Services, where connections are provided by our key partner, RM IHG, at 0% margin.

The day-to-day operation of the Trust is the responsibility of the Senior Management Team who is accountable to the Board of Trustees.

The SWGfL Trust is a member of the NEN (The Education Network) to ensure that all schools, colleges and universities are connected through a single infrastructure enabling a high quality online learning experience in a safe and secure networked environment.

The Education Cloud Services provides schools across the UK with a new and innovative way in which to purchase flexible, secure, cloud-based services that can be tailored to meet individual school requirements and transform the use of technology. We’re really excited about the possibilities of ECS, we’re here to find ways for ICT to advance education, and these new services will help us achieve that objective.
