Whilst SWGfL Merlin will provide an adequate solution for many schools, it may be the case that additional functionality will be required. Additional resources and features can be added to your Learning Platform through the purchase of a 3rd party content (or educational software), or by adding a Virtual Learning Environment.
The differences between SWGfL Merlin and a VLE are outlined in this document and in the diagram below:
What will SWGfL Merlin provide? (PDF)
The diagram below shows the shared functionality and additional functionality provided within a VLE:
A useful resource available to schools is the Becta matrix tool which helps to establish their status in terms of
Learning Platform functionality. It presents the specifications in an accessible way by using language that is relevant and appropriate at institutional level. The emphasis is away from labels and acronyms (MLEs, VLEs etc.) and towards functional requirements. It will help you assess your institution's ICT functionalities by looking at what it enables you to do and then produce an action plan for improvement.
