Grants available for teachers interested in education research

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) is keen to encourage teachers of mathematics in schools and colleges to form Mathematics Knowledge Networks (MKNs).

These networks or communities of professional learning can be in a single school, college or other training provider institution or drawn from several establishments. They must have a specific area of interest, with an underlying focus on Mathematical Knowledge.

If you have an interest in working with other classroom teachers or maths specialists in secondary schools, in order to investigate the most effective ways of taking maths education forward, you can apply for a grant of up to £2000 to help you undertake this work.

The areas that NCETM are asking for applications to consider are:
  • Developing Discussion in Mathematics
What constitutes effective discussion in mathematics and what teaching strategies support this?
  • The use of NCETM portal tools
How can the various tools, sources and resources on the NCETM portal support professional learning?
  • Embedding the effective use of ICT in mathematics teaching
How can the use of ICT support high quality, interactive teaching and the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching?
  • Strengthening Mathematical Knowledge
What models of teachers working together on their own subject knowledge are effective as vehicles for rich CPD?
  • Exploring the different mathematical experiences of learners at primary and secondary level
How might the mathematical experiences of learners be different between phases and what are the implications for practice?
  • The teaching of mathematical proof
An exploration of the role of mathematical explanation and proof in the teaching and learning of mathematics and implications for good practice.
  • Using assessment to promote learning in mathematics
What forms of assessment are most supportive of learning mathematics and how can they be effectively and efficiently integrated into classroom teaching?
  • Exploring rich mathematical tasks
An investigation into what constitutes a rich mathematical task and what kinds of tools, resources and classroom practice can support the use of such tasks in classrooms.
  • Supporting gifted and talented learners in mathematics
What are the qualities and needs of the gifted and talented learner in mathematics and what provision might support them most effectively?
All the details of how to apply can be found on the NCETM portal at www.ncetm.org.uk/mkn.   You can also find out more by contacting your NCETM regional co-ordinator whose details you will also find on that web page.
