connectivity services

Due to such a wide variety of applications to education, internet use in your schools has continued to grow every year. As users need more and more bandwidth to benefit from the latest content, SWGfL have ensured you have the products available to give your users the connectivity they want, wherever and whenever they need it!

product overview

With a South West Grid for Learning broadband internet connection, your establishment gets a safe, secure, high-speed connection to the Internet, tailored for use within an educational environment.

With a SWGfL connection, you’re connected to the National Education Network; a secure, private network that connects together all schools, colleges, universities and other educational bodies across the UK.

We’re also one of a small number of Becta accredited Internet Service Providers, having met stringent requirements to make our service suitable for educational use.

Where our standard broadband connectivity option isn't available, or isn't suitable, we also offer the following ADSL packages:
  • SWGfL ADSL (for schools or larger establishments that are unable to take a standard SWGfL SDSL service);
  • SWGfL ADSL Homeworker (for educational workers who require a secure SWGfL connection at home);
  • SWGfL Local (for smaller educational establishments e.g. youth clubs or PRUs).

product benefits

  • Engage learners with feature-rich, interactive online learning resources from around the National Education Network, over a high-speed broadband connection;
  • Increase productivity with multimedia services such as video conferencing;
  • Protect your establishment and your users. IWF Filtering ensures that users cannot access illegal content;
  • Reduce the risk of malicious hacking attempts with SWGfL’s private, firwewalled network.

product overview

Over recent years fixed line broadband has become enormously essential in schools, but an increasing number of schools now also use mobile broadband technology to access the Internet. The take up of mobile broadband has increased quickly, as it enables users to enjoy total mobility, as well as convenience, ease, and flexibility, which are all things you don’t get with fixed line broadband. With mobile broadband your school and its resources, including the Learning Platform, can be accessed whenever and wherever you want them to be.

The solution is provided in partnership with T-Mobile and provides mobile access to the SWGfL network from a USB modem ‘dongle’ with speeds up to 3Mbps. The solution will offer HSPDA (High Speed Download Packet Access) connectivity, sometimes referred to as 3.5G. This is an enhancement of 3G, making higher bandwidths available. T-mobile has a network sharing agreement in place with 3UK, giving them a strong 3G footprint in the SWGfL region.

product benefits

  • Mobile technology provides high-speed internet access (in areas with 3G coverage) where a standard wired service may not be practical, possible or cost-effective;
  • You’ll enjoy access to content and resources only accessible from a SWGfL internet connection (Such as Audio Network), anywhere, at any time;
  • You’re safe in the knowledge that the user is protected by the SWGfL filtering system, even when they’re outside of your establishment, or are using the service unsupervised;
  • Dedicated support is available until 22:00, 7 days a week, to suit home-users.
