The EU Kids Online project has been running for three years and is now reaching its final stage with a report on its findings. It has examined a wide range of issues in relation to children’s use of the internet and new media across 21 countries.
The website of EU Kids Online provides a searchable database of European research on children's experience online, plus best practice research FAQs and resources for researching children's internet use. It also contains all the reports and data from the project’s research.
Amongst many things within the report, it concludes that UK children are classified as amongst the highest internet users in Europe but also the highest risk takers (along with Netherlands, Estonia, Slovenia, Poland, Iceland and Norway).
91% of UK children (6 to 17) use the internet, including 87% of 6-10 year olds. We also have amongst the highest of broadband penetration at home.
The aim was to identify comparable findings across Europe and evaluate the social, cultural and regulatory influences affecting online opportunities and risks, along with children’s and parents’ responses, in order to inform policy. It has charted available data, pinpointed gaps and identified factors shaping the capability of European research institutions. Finally, it examined methodological issues relating to the cross-cultural study of children’s online experience.
