If you are
unable to use a digital camera then consider using 'throwaway'
35mm cameras with this project.
Issue the
cameras and give a clear brief of what you want. Give the children
plenty of information about the project with an accompanying sheet
to take home. Not all parents may want their domestic situation
recorded, so provide the children with alternative subjects to
photograph such as pets, the garden etc.
Try to give
the children some instruction on how to use a camera. Many throwaway
cameras have wide angle lenses, so it important to encourage the
photographer to get close enough to the subject.
When all of
the cameras are returned arrange for batch processing (which will
be cheaper). When the prints come back arrange a session where
all of the images are spread out on a table in the class and discusssed.
Encourage
each participant to select four images. Arrange for a session
to scan in the chosen images and to compose some text. Alternatively
the selected images can be sent to a laboratory (or local chemists)
to have the images scanned to CD (Picture CD or PhotoCD). This
usually takes about a week. You need to take the negatives not
the prints. The resulting CD is a handy way to have your source
images backed up.
