The frontage of the town has always been subject to significant marine erosion: breaches of the sea wall and landslides. There have been numerous attempts to prevent and repair this damage.

The Cobb dates back to the 13th Century and displays many repairs and extensions since that time. Below is a simply summary of the construction that can be seen today.
