Introduction
The Environmental Improvements are divided into four phases that reflect the areas of the town affected by landslides and marine erosion:

Phase 1: Cobb Gate to Church Cliff
Phases II & III: Cobb Gate to the harbour
Phase IV: East Cliff
The Cobb: The Cobb structure itself
Monmouth Beach

The construction work for Phase I, which comprises a new sea wall, sewage pumping station and rock armour, was completed in 1995. From 1995 to 2000, West Dorset District Council, assisted by its consultants, have been carrying out a series of preliminary studies to gain information for the conceptual design of effective and economic coast protection works for the remaining three geographical areas. The studies have been both fairly detailed and wide in scope in order to address the relatively complex nature of the coastal erosion and instability.
