Phase 1: Cobb Gate to East Cliff

The award-winning scheme has delivered major environmental and amenity improvements to Lyme Regis. The Cobb Gate area contains some of the most historic elements of the town including old sea defences that were in need of urgent renovation in order to continue to protect the town. At the same time there was an essential need to improve the quality of the bathing water through the provision of a sewerage treatment works, at least part of which (due to drainage) had to be located within this area of the town.

The solution was developed between West Dorset District Council, South West Water and Rendel Geotechnics (engineers) in full consultation with local people. A combined sea defence, sewerage pumping station and amenity promenade was designed in the early 1990’s and work was completed in 1995. Such a combined project is thought to be unique and received recognition through the 1995 Secretary of State’s Special Commendation for Environmental Excellence and the 1997 Civic Trust Environmental Award for outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the Environment.
