Lesson Ideas (from MTN collection)

MTN are creating a series of lesson ideas (100 by Christmas!) to help you extend the use of Making the News in the classroom. The first one is outlined below:

Lesson idea 1- English/Media
Create a postcard (KS2/KS3/KS4)

*In small groups, study postcards. View them online and get pupils to bring them into the classroom. Discuss the different types of postcards, their design and purpose.

Choose a theme and create your own postcard that reflects where you live. On the postcard, indicate the location, not the address. It can be a photograph of a location, a painting or something that you have made.

Publish it on Making the News.

*Create a Sound postcard. Record sounds around the school or area that you live and edit it to produce a short two or 3 minute audio file. It can be a podcast if you publish it on Making the News as an MP3 file. Have a look at some sonic postcards in the Links section.

Publish it on Making the News.

*Create a Multimedia postcard as PowerPoint file or using Photostory 3, Moviemaker, Quicktime Pro or any other editing software. Again choose a theme and focus on the area you live. Keep it short and produce a personal account of your area.

Publish it on Making the News.

Whatever you choose why not introduce the postcard with the Flashblog facility, accessible via the MTN submission form. What is Flashblog? Flashblog is a very simple way to record a movie or sound. All you need is a webcam and have access to the Internet.

This is only one example of a growing collection of MTN lesson ideas. If you have any innovative lesson ideas, you can contact Jeff Howson at: jeffrhowson@gmail.com.
