Middle Course

Characteristics:

  • Lateral erosion widens the valley profile.
  • River bends become more pronounced producing meanders.
  • A flood plain begins to form on the valley floor.

The lateral erosion of the river truncates the interlocking spurs. The floor of the valley widens as the river on concave banks deposits material.

lateral erosion of the river truncates the interlocking spurs. End of spurs gets cut off by lateral erosion, and the river valley is widened.
As the valley widens, there is more and more deposition of the valley floor. Spurs have been cut back by lateral erosion to form a line of bluffs.

The processes at work on the bends of the river become the dominant feature of the river.
