Drawing by H Burn 1840 Although the first considerable residence in Bournemouth was erected in 1810, there was no general extension of the building until 1836, when plans for laying out the Gervis Estate were prepared by the eminent architect Benjamin Ferry. This very early drawing shows progress up to about 1840. The Westover Villas were commenced in 1837, and the Bath Hotel was opened in June 1838. The provision of a parish church, which was part of the general scheme, was not affected until 1842, and the view was particularly interesting as showing this familiar part of old Bournemouth as it was immediately before the erection of St. Peter's. On the extreme left can be seen the posting-inn, which built in 1811 as "The Tapps Arms," had been rebuilt and renamed "The Tregonwell Arms" in 1832 and remained in existence until 1884. Reproduction is courtesy of A.H. Butt, Esq., of Bournemouth, and is from an original coloured lithograph after a draw by H. Burn.
