The Napoleonic War had a considerable effect on the growth of Torquay. Not only did Napoleon himself become a temporary tourist attraction at the end of the war but also the stationing of the Channel Fleet in Torbay meant that many wives of naval officers came to live in Torquay for a time. They experienced the delights of the area and word spread.
