The map shows Torbay and the surrounding area before Torquay became a popular place for the rich to visit. Notice how small Torquay was. “Hundred” was a unit of local administration originating in Anglo Saxon times and still used in the 18th century. Find places that are now all part of the urban area of Torbay but were then separated by open country. Notice too how the names of wealthy families are marked on the map, such as the Carys near Torre Abbey and the Mallocks near Cockington. This shows how important they were. Try using the original key to the map to find any features that have changed or no longer exist.
