This painting offers a good opportunity to investigate the development of the harbour area, westwards towards Torre Abbey Meadow. The area immediately in front of Waldon Hill was reclaimed in the 1860’s and has since been through stages of development that are linked to the growing demands of tourism. These include the building of Princess Garden and Princess Pier. Other images (including ‘seafront late 19th century') on this site can be used to compare this painting with more recent sources. Questions can be asked about the differences between them. Importantly, why and how did Torquay develop? A sequence could be constructed in which pupils might paste picture sources into a word processor to be part of an account of Torquay’s development in the 19th century.
