This source counters expectations from pupils that the holiday season would have been the summer. Torquay for most of the 19th century was a winter resort. Later there were efforts to encourage summer visitors. It is also very clear that people of high rank/importance were key visitors. Only the very wealthy had the time and money to visit seaside resorts.
