This extract shows us what were regarded as the attractions of Torquay in the early 19th century. Notice how the area is described as beautiful, quiet and good for the health. Torquay was apparently for those people who can manage without fashionable amusements and prefer a quiet spot. It must be remembered that only the rich had the time and money to visit the seaside at that time.
