This shows Torre Abbey, the home of the local, wealthy Cary family, and Torquay Harbour in the distance. The hills behind Torquay have only a few villas built for the rich to rent or to live in. These would increase in number through the century. The beautiful views and quiet seclusion were aspects of the area which attracted more wealthy visitors. Notice that there is no coast road to Torquay around Waldon Hill in the centre of the picture. That was not built until 1842. Before the coming of the railway, some rich visitors would come by sea on paddle steamers, such as the one in the picture, which made regular trips along the coast from London.
