There is some typical flowery prose
here and packed into it are many of the features which the
wealthy visitor liked about Torquay early in the 19th
century. It was its refinement as a quiet and picturesque
place for the discerning visitor which is being emphasised in
this source and which attracted rich visitors. The local
landed families of the Palks and the Carys plainly saw some
opportunities here to make money by providing facilities for
visitors, such as houses to rent and hotels.
Pupils could write a piece for a newspaper of the time
setting out the attractions of Torquay and why rich visitors
should come. To do so, it would be wise of they also looked
at other sources.
