Royals in Torquay

Things to Consider           Teachers Notes

Torquay was on Thursday last honoured with a visit from their Royal Highnesses, the Princess Victoria and the Duchess of Kent who arrived there in the Emerald Yacht towed by the messenger steamer. About 6 o’clock, they were seen entering the bay: immediately the Royal Standard was hoisted at the pier and a royal salute was fired from cannon placed on Beacon Hill and on the warren. On landing they proceeded to the Royal Hotel. Their Royal Highnesses frequently came out on the balcony and were greeted by the assembled crowd with hearty cheers. The bay presented a magnificent appearance – there being nearly fifty yachts, principally of the Royal Yacht Squadron, most of which made a grand display with their flags.
