Pupils might be asked to consider why the Queen and Prince Albert visited by sea. They were in fact on a coastal cruise, but in 1846 there was no railway to Torquay and it was commonplace for the wealthy to arrive in the area by sea. Pupils might also speculate on the accuracy of this drawing. Certainly it is unlikely that an artist was poised ready to start sketching but it is probable that the scene was witnessed first hand.
