Notice the houses of the wealthy, particularly those on the hills behind the harbour. Why would wealthy people want to stay or live in Torquay? Use other sources to find out what features of the area were attractive to visitors.

Notice the boats in the harbour. Are they all sailing boats? Is the harbour busy? The harbour was used partly by fishermen and partly for international and coastal trade. Before the coming of the railway, wealthy visitors would arrive by sea on steam ships from London.

Look at the print called TorquayHarbour 1825. How can we tell that this is an earlier picture? Look at the roads, houses and buildings and ships in the harbour.

Look at the photo of the harbour called Seafront (1880s).What differences do you notice? Have the buildings changed? Is the harbour busier? Is it more built up?

Look at the photograph called Seafront (late 19th century). What changes have taken place? Is it busier? Look at boats in the harbour, the roads, houses and the land use.
