The Effects of the Railway

Things to Consider           Teachers Notes

This delightful watering place already feels the beneficial effects of railway communication by the opening of the South Devon branch line. The town is well filled with visitors of distinction… and hardly a night passes without balls and parties amongst the highest classes, nor have the Christmas festivities been scarce amongst the tradesmen and the workmen.

Last evening there was a grand fancy ball at this delightful watering place, which was attended by 250 of the fashionables at present resident in the place, and the elite of the surrounding country.
