First Train to TorquayThings to Consider Teachers Notes The breeze was blowing fresh from the westward as I gained the platform of the St Thomas Station on Monday forenoon, assuming it’s before the hour set down in the train bill (timetable) for the starting of the Plymouth mail train. It was understood that this train would open the Torquay branch on that day, and the occasion had attracted many agog with curiosity to witness the celebration. At length, the policeman’s bell announced the approach of the train from the St. David’s station. The engine was gaily decorated with flags and evergreens, and had an artistic effect. As I passed that portion of the train which was intended to run off at Newton on to the Torquay deviation, I perceived that some of the Directors of the South Devon Company were in one of the carriages. I recognized the well known features of Mr Buller, Chairman of the Bristol and Exeter Company, and of Dr Miller, who is a resident of Exeter. Mr Brunel was also with them. This is an extract from the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, 23 December 1848. Glossary:
