This source depicts the attractions of the winter season in Torquay. For much of the 19th century, the town was mainly a winter resort and it was less busy and cheaper in the summer. This is of course the reverse of what many pupils would expect. The rich, especially invalids, went there to take advantage of the mild winters and stayed in luxury apartments. In conjunction with using other sources, pupils could create a description of the winter season in Torquay or a piece of writing to persuade rich people to spend their winter here.
