This photo provides an opportunity for
pupils to explore aspects of the way of life in late
Victorian times through the different activities on the beach
and to develop their skills in using historical
sources.
Although Torquay was a popular resort for the wealthy by the
end of the 19th century, many previous ways of earning a
living continued. The shift to the dominance of tourism was
slow and not completed till later in the 20th century. Here
there is ample evidence of fishing as well as of Victorian
anxiety about exposing their bodies to the world and the
consequent use of bathing machines. The machines were lowered
into and raised form the water using ropes attached to wooden
capstans which can be seen at the top of the steps down to
the beach.
