Aunt Belle tells us how the wealthy were attracted to Torquay but also refers to the very poor. She says she has never seen such poverty before. This was an aspect of Torquay which was not mentioned in the efforts to attract the rich visitors.

Belle complains about the high numbers of infirm old people and younger invalids. Many came to Torquay because of the mild climate and the belief that the air was healthy but it clearly spoilt Belle’s enjoyment to see so many sick people.

Another aspect of Torquay she mentions is the amount of rain. Again this was not something often discussed as the climate of Torquay was believed to be one of its main advantages.

Belle was an American and is giving her views in her own diary. She also lived in Torquay for four months. Does this mean what she tells us is likely to be more or less reliable?
