'This photograph shows the type of boat used for transporting goods such as onions, cement and coal. Goods were unloaded manually. With the use of pulleys and ropes the cargo would have been lifted out of the hold and then carried to the quayside. In a busy port today we would expect to see lifting gear such as cranes to help in the arduous task of offloading heavy cargo. Once the goods had been off loaded onto the quay they had to be delivered to local businesses. Although the railway came to Torquay in 1848, ships were still used to transport heavy goods along the coast to the growing town.
