This photograph is a useful indicator that fishing remained an important activity in the late 19th century, despite the growth of the holiday industry. Pupils might be asked to consider whether the people in the photo were posing as this makes a difference to the conclusions that can be drawn from photographic sources. It is unlikely that the people here were aware they were being photographed and probable too that some were visitors watching the fishermen at work.
