This is a scene of the harbour and surrounding area of Torquay looking eastwards. Vaughan Parade (lower left) is a terrace development of mainly commercial businesses, built in the late 1820s. On the horizon is Park Hill with its luxurious villas. Compare the two areas of Vaughan Parade and Park Hill. Vaughan Parade was a terrace of commercial properties sited on the quayside where they are easily accessible for trade and commerce. The villas on Park Hill were built for wealthy residents and visitors and show how Torquay continued to attract the very wealthy. The location of these villas provided excellent views across the bay.
