As well as listing all important inhabitants and different trades people of Torquay, Kelly’s Directory provides some basic information about the town in 1883. Notice how it refers to the mild climate and how well exotic plants grew in the town. Goods imported through Torquay Harbour are mentioned as well as exports of limestone and marble. This would have supported quite a number of jobs.

As might be expected, there is also information about attractions provided for visitors. These included the new Winter Gardens which were used for concerts, dances etc. Walking in the fresh air was a popular past time and the Public Gardens were provided for this. The public baths on Beacon Hill were for bathing in sea water which was believed to be very healthy.
