Princess Gardens were built on land reclaimed from the sea. They were opened in 1894. The flagstaff now stands to the right of the main front of the pavilion, and it bears a tablet recording a brave deed that happened there in 1873. March Phillips then 80 years old threw himself into the sea, and with great difficulty saved a little girl from drowning. Reclaiming land from the sea in this way is one of the approaches taken to enhancing the attractions of the resort to the type of wealthy clientele who came to the area.
