Notice the reference to the station lying at a considerable distance from the town. There were various proposals for a station at the harbour but opposition form landowners put a stop to these. The views, hills and steep cliffs were among the attractions of Torquay.

The references to the climate are interesting. Often writers praised the mild winters and pleasant summers. How does W Miller differ from this? Most people in Victorian times were careful not to expose much of their bodies on the beach. Instead people using bathing machines that were like sheds on wheels which were pulled into the sea by horses or lowered on ropes. Then bathers could slip into the water unseen. How does this writer show that not everyone did this?
