Notice the reference to the station lying at a considerable
distance from the town. There were various proposals for a station at the harbour but
opposition form landowners put a stop to these. The views, hills and steep cliffs were
among the attractions of Torquay.
The references to the climate are interesting. Often writers praised the mild winters and
pleasant summers. How does W Miller differ from this? Most people in Victorian times were
careful not to expose much of their bodies on the beach. Instead people using bathing
machines that were like sheds on wheels which were pulled into the sea by horses or
lowered on ropes. Then bathers could slip into the water unseen. How does this writer show
that not everyone did this?
