This source is interesting in the way that the climate is criticised for sometimes being too hot and having very cold winds in winter. This is a useful corrective to the many sources which state the usual line of mild winters and pleasant summers. Plainly it was not always like that! While bathing machines commonly preserved Victorian sensibilities, again this was not always the case as the description of the men running naked to the water makes clear. There is scope here for pupils to build understanding that not everyone in the past had the same views or practices and that generalisations often mask this.
