The cannon taken during the siege of Sebastopol stood on Cary Green from 1874 until moved into newly-constructed Princess Gardens, 1890. That clearly dates this photograph to sometime a little before 1890. Sulyarde Terrace next door was built as priavte housing but later an extra storey was added and it was joined to the Hotel. The Torbay Hotel was one of several large and imposing such buildings. Pupils could construct an advertisement to encourage wealthy clients to come to stay.
