Commending Torquay

Things to Consider           Teachers Notes

In commending Torquay as a very acceptable place for a summer holiday, let us endeavour to dissipate erroneous notions which exist as to its being insufferably hot in the months of June and July. Because dracaenas, palms, and other sub-tropical plants thrive in the open all the year round, some persons are possessed with the idea that the temperature must be abnormally high in the summer. Meteorological records, regularly taken near the seashore and upon a lofty eminence, prove that the temperature of Torquay, tempered as it is by the soft breezes wafted in from the sea, has been on the average seven or eight degrees lower than that of London.

This is an extract from the Bristol Mercury newspaper published in Torquay Illustrated in 1893.
