What the papers sayThings to Consider Teachers Notes Torquay presents from the sea a picture, the natural beauty of which is not surpassed by any seaside watering place in the kingdom, whilst its mild, genial, (pleasant) and equable climate, (climate where temperatures never get very hot or very cold) its perfect system of drainage, and its admirable and practically inexhaustible water supply, combine to establish its high reputation as a health resort. In the winter its palatial (impressive, like a palace) hotels, and its numerous boarding and lodging-houses are crowded with visitors; but it is with the summer we have to do in this series of articles, and we hope in the course of this description of the "Queen of watering-places" to demonstrate that it is a very desirable place in which to spend a summer holiday, at least for those who can appreciate a restful and tranquil haven, with lovely sylvan (wooded) scenery, delightful walks, and such healthful recreation as daily steamboat excursions along the coast, charming moorland coach drives, yachting, and boating afford… And to be practical, let us here state that the winter being Torquay’s principal season, lodgings and apartments are obtainable in the summer upon …moderate terms… This is an extract from the Bristol Mercury newspaper quoted in Torquay Illustrated 1893. |
