Notice what has changed since the 1806 map. You can see that the harbour now has a second jetty, not just one. Now there is a road along the coast towards Torre Abbey and Paignton beyond. What can you find that seems to have stayed much the same? Look out for the general pattern of the streets. Where are the new buildings and streets?
What changes have taken place in the 40 years between these two maps? You can see the land which has been reclaimed to create the Princess Gardens and the new Princess Pier which has made the harbour much bigger. What can you find that seems to stayed much the same? Look out for the general pattern of the streets and the hotels. Notice that number of houses on the hills around the harbour that have "villa" or "house" in their names. These were mostly owned or rented by rich visitors to Torquay. If you look carefully where the Strand joins Torwood Street you will see the Clock Tower. This was built in 1902 and is of course not on the 1866 map.
